Finding Assumptions and Experiments

Using the suggest experiments feature of CASEy

Updated over a week ago

CASEy has built in analysis tools to find the top assumptions and suggest experiments to test those assumptions. This is sometimes called assumption mapping or hypothesis testing.

From any Strategic Challenge/Objective simply click on the SUGGEST EXPERIMENTS button to call on heyCASEy to list three risky assumptions and three experiments for each that might confirm/dispel that assumption.

CASEy helps companies succeed by having clearly articulated visions and strategies that get solved.

This video will explain how to find risky assumptions in strategic challenges or objectives using CASEy at HeyCASEY.io.

CASEy implements the Continuous Adaptive Strategy Execution method, or CASE for short.

CASE is a dynamic method to align strategy within companies and achieve results.

For every challenge or objective, there may be assumptions that need to be tested with customer input or experimentation before any ideas should be selected.

This is sometimes called Assumption Mapping, or Hypothesis Testing, and it is a crucial step in avoiding investing in the wrong ideas, potentially building something that isn't useful or impactful.

Let's take a look.

For any strategic challenge or objective card, click on its View button to see all of its details.

In this case, you are Blockbuster doing DVD rentals, and your challenge is "Competing against new streaming-only competitors who don't mail DVDs." Click on the suggest experiments button, and I'll turn your challenge into three risky assumption hypotheses and how I would test them to expand your thinking and reduce risk.

In this case, my first hypothesis is "Customers prefer the convenience of streaming content over renting physical DVDs." I suggest market research through a quick online customer survey to find preference for streaming, do a trial streaming service for a limited time, or analyze the retention rate.

I'd suggest if Blockbuster had done any of these experiments a little earlier, and with a little more urgency, we wouldn't be having this discussion now.

The preferred way to use my suggest experiments feature is to discuss the hypotheses I come up with.

If any experiment feels prudent, click on the accept suggestion arrow and an idea is created with the experiment details.

And that's it, you will have discussed and considered experiments that corroborate your assumptions for challenges and ideas, and be ready to pick the best idea to get a better outcome, but that's for another video.
